Gov. Newsom to sue Trump over deploying the National Guard to L.A. protests

California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration to roll back the National Guard deployment, which he calls an "illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional act." Trump authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles, citing a legal provision that allows him to mobilize federal troops when there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the government. The deployment is the first time in decades that a state's National Guard was activated without a request from its governor. Trump criticized Newsom, calling him "grossly incompetent" and accusing him of mismanaging the state's high-speed rail project. Trump also criticized protesters, calling them "professional agitators" and "bad people" who should be in jail. The protests in Los Angeles were sparked by ICE arrests on Friday, and escalated over the weekend, with the National Guard being deployed on Sunday. The Mexican government has called for due process for the 42 Mexicans detained in the raids, and has condemned violent actions as a form of protest. Union leaders are planning a rally in downtown Los Angeles to support a labor leader arrested during the protests, and more rallies are planned in at least a dozen other cities. Chicago leaders have joined the protests, calling for the release of a regional president of the Service Employees International Union who was arrested in California.
