Trump Admin Will Partially Fund November Food Stamps: Filing

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide reduced food stamp benefits for November due to a government shutdown and lack of appropriations. Administration lawyers stated that billions in contingency funds will be used, but no additional money will be allocated. This means many SNAP recipients will only receive half of their usual benefits. A federal judge previously ordered the USDA to use contingency money to at least partially fund November benefits. Congress has not yet reached a deal to reopen the government or provide new funding for SNAP. The judge suggested officials find additional funds beyond contingency money to fully cover November payments. However, officials stated they are using the remaining $4.6 billion in contingency funds to cover 50% of eligible households' allotments. People whose SNAP applications are verified in November will not receive any money. States will likely face difficulties implementing the system changes needed to distribute the reduced benefits. Officials opted not to use tariff revenue or other funds, citing their necessity for child nutrition and other programs.
