Two veteran firefighters, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison, were killed in a shooting near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The shooting occurred on Sunday when a lone gunman ambushed the firefighters who were responding to a wildfire. Harwood, 42, was a 17-year veteran of the county fire department, a husband, and a father of two children, and a former Army National Guard combat engineer. Morrison, 52, served the city for over 28 years, working his way up to battalion chief. A third firefighter, Coeur d'Alene Fire Department engineer David Tysdal, 47, was critically injured in the shooting and is in a local hospital. Tysdal, a 23-year veteran of the fire department, had two successful surgeries as of Monday noon. The fallen firefighters will be honored with a procession of emergency vehicles on Tuesday morning. The suspect, Wess Roley, is being investigated for the shooting. The motive behind the attack is still unknown. The incident is a tragic loss for the community, and the firefighters' bravery and sacrifice will be remembered.
