The Premier League is introducing a new AI referee tool, the Semi-Assisted Offside Technology (SAOT), to improve offside decision-making. Developed by Genius Sports, SAOT uses a network of 24 to 28 iPhones around the pitch to collect data, which is then analyzed by GeniusIQ AI to determine player positions and potential offsides. Unlike traditional VAR systems that require expensive 4K cameras, SAOT relies on iPhones to generate detailed 3D virtual models of players, significantly increasing accuracy. The AI system processes between 7,000 and 10,000 data points per match, compared to the 30 to 40 tracking points used by current systems. This new technology promises to streamline decision-making and reduce delays associated with VAR, although its effectiveness in live matches is yet to be fully proven. The global football community will closely monitor SAOT's performance, as it has the potential to set a new standard for sports technology. However, the system's success depends on its ability to consistently outperform existing methods and avoid technical issues. Ultimately, human referees will still make the final decision on offsides, regardless of AI input.
