Nicole Medina has had to fix her dishwasher multiple times, despite its expected 10-12 year lifespan. Glenn Lewis, president of Mr. Appliance, says dishwashers are often replaced too frequently and can be maintained to last longer. Lewis has worked on a 1955 dishwasher and heard of customers using theirs for 24 years or more. A dishwasher works by heating, circulating, and redistributing water in multiple cycles with and without detergent. Common issue with dishwashers is user error, such as not cleaning the filter, overloading the dishwasher, and not descaling the machine. To make a dishwasher last longer, it's essential to clean it regularly, including the filter, door seals, and inside of the machine. Descaling the machine every six months is also crucial, especially in areas with hard water. Using a dishwasher regularly, even in vacation homes, can prevent pipes and seals from freezing and bursting. Paying more for a dishwasher does not necessarily mean it will last longer, but proper use and maintenance can extend its lifespan. By following these tips, homeowners can save money on repairs and replacements and extend the life of their dishwasher.
