Apple has launched the 2026 Mac Studio models featuring the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, replacing the previous M4 Max and M3 Ultra configurations. The physical design of the Mac Studio remains unchanged for the fifth year, with all updates being internal. Key upgrades across both new models include a next-generation SSD architecture with doubled read/write speeds and the adoption of Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, powered by Apple's N1 chip. The new machines are also constructed with a significant percentage of recycled materials, including aluminum and rare earth elements.The M5 Max chip offers an 18-core CPU as standard, an improvement over the M4 Max's 14-core base, and features enhanced graphics with Neural Accelerators and third-generation ray tracing capabilities. Memory bandwidth sees a slight increase, and unified memory options are more flexible, with a 128GB option available for the 40-core GPU configuration. The M5 Ultra chip boasts an upgraded CPU with a 30-core base configuration and features third-generation ray tracing and second-generation Dynamic Caching. It also offers substantially increased memory bandwidth at 1.2TB/s, supporting up to 512GB of unified memory.Apple claims significant performance gains, particularly in AI and graphics-intensive tasks like LLM processing and text-to-image generation, with the new chips. For users of older M1 or M2 Mac Studios, the M5 Max and M5 Ultra represent a substantial upgrade, offering considerable speed improvements and modern connectivity features. However, current M4 Max and M3 Ultra owners may not find compelling reasons to upgrade unless their workflow heavily relies on AI tasks that benefit from the new Neural Accelerators. The decision to upgrade also hinges on pricing, as the new models are generally more expensive than their predecessors at launch. Configuration choices are important, especially the link between GPU cores and unified memory capacity, particularly for AI workloads. The M5 Ultra is positioned as Apple's highest-end Mac following the discontinuation of the Mac Pro.
