Anne Wojcicki's TTAM Research Institute is poised to regain control of 23andMe's assets after outbidding Regeneron. Regeneron initially acquired 23andMe for $256 million in a bankruptcy auction, but TTAM Research Institute offered $305 million, reopening the bidding process. Regeneron declined to counter the higher offer, potentially handing ownership back to Wojcicki. A judge must approve the deal at a hearing scheduled for June 17, 2025. Regeneron had planned to retain 23andMe employees and continue offering DNA testing kits, leveraging the genetic data for drug target identification. Wojcicki's plans remain unclear, but TTAM has committed to data and privacy protections, including allowing users to delete data and opt-out of research. They also pledge not to sell or transfer genetic data without adhering to the same privacy measures. Wojcicki resigned as CEO to facilitate a bid for the company's assets after 23andMe declared bankruptcy in March 2025. She aims to empower individuals with access to and control over their genetic data. 23andMe faced challenges, including a data breach and mass layoffs, leading to its financial struggles.
