A molecular model for the Ge(100) buckled dimer
Pairs of surface atoms displaced above and below the surface plane, known as buckled dimers, govern the reactivity of Si and Ge(100) surfaces, but their chemistry at the atomic scale is difficult to isolate and quantify. Now a structurally constraining macrocyclic ligand has enabled the synthesis of a molecular digermene analogue, providing a platform for probing its ambiphilic reactivity in solution.
