Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm, has invested $55 million in LayerZero, a Web3 company that operates a crosschain messaging protocol. This is not the firm's first investment in LayerZero, having previously invested in March 2022 and April 2023. The valuation of the funding round has not been disclosed, but LayerZero was valued at $3 billion during its Series B funding round in April 2023. The company has received investments from 33 investors, including Circle Ventures, OKX Ventures, and Sequoia Capital. LayerZero has been involved in a dispute with the FTX Estate, which was settled in January 2025. The company launched its own token, LayerZero (ZRO), in June 2024. Crosschain messaging protocols like LayerZero enable programs to share information across ecosystems, which is critical for decentralized applications and traders. The company competes with other protocols such as Wormhole, Stargate, and Connext. Wormhole is one of the largest competitors, having raised $225 million at a $2.5 billion valuation in November 2023. The trend of being omnichain or chain-agnostic is gaining traction, with companies like Phantom and Magic Eden expanding their support to multiple blockchains.
