Addressing Multimorbidity Challenges in Diabetes

The prevalence of diabetes continues to increase in the US: approximately 40 million people have diabetes, and 115 million adults aged 18 years or older have prediabetes. More than 30 million adults with prediabetes are aged 65 years or older and more than half of these older adults (52.1%) are at risk of diabetes and multimorbidity. Worldwide, data from the International Diabetes Federation suggest that in 2024 more than 500 million adults were living with diabetes, and this number is projected to increase to close to 900 million by 2050. Adding individuals with prediabetes, a previous analysis of the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas reported that prediabetes affected approximately 720 million individuals worldwide, with nearly 1 billion people with prediabetes projected by 2045.
