Agentic orchestration: Enterprise AI organizations know how to govern agents but still can't meter what they cost
Agent orchestration in enterprises is not about a single platform but a pluralistic strategy. Businesses typically employ three orchestration platforms to achieve flexibility across various AI models. Microsoft currently leads in primary platform usage, while Anthropic is notably considered for future adoption. Enterprises envision a hybrid AI control plane, integrating leading AI providers with independent technologies. The primary concern with provider-resident control is not vendor lock-in, but limitations imposed by the provider's security and permissions. A significant portion of enterprises lack real-time mechanisms to stop runaway agents, risking unexpected costs. This research highlights that selecting orchestration platforms is driven by flexibility, security, and reliability over model affinity. Enterprises prioritize dependable multi-step execution as the key metric for orchestration success. Despite satisfaction with current platforms, two-thirds plan to adopt or change them within a year. Anthropic is gaining significant consideration for future platforms, indicating a shift in strategic focus.
