AirPods 5 Teardown: Batteries Removable, Case Still Tough
iFixit has dismantled Apple's new AirPods 5, revealing slight improvements in repairability over previous models. The AirPods 5 feature pronged batteries, similar to the AirPods 3, which are more accessible for removal. These batteries can be unplugged intuitively with the aid of tongs. The earbuds are also easier to pry open than prior generations, requiring heat from a hairdryer and a clamp. However, the left and right earbuds utilize batteries with reversed polarity, making them non-interchangeable. Despite these advancements in the earbuds, iFixit described the charging case as a difficult component to access without causing damage. Consequently, the AirPods 5 received an overall repairability score of 2 out of 10. This is an improvement from the 0 out of 10 score awarded to all previous AirPods versions. The site suggests that skilled technicians and determined DIY enthusiasts can potentially replace AirPods batteries with reasonable success.
