AirPods Max With Lightning vs. USB-C Buyer's Guide: All Differences Compared

Apple's AirPods Max initially launched in 2020 with a Lightning port, later updated in 2024 to USB-C. This change, as part of iOS 18.4, brought improved functionality to the USB-C model, specifically regarding wired audio. The USB-C version now supports 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio via a USB-C to USB-C cable, a feature not available on the Lightning model. The USB-C model also offers "ultra-low" latency audio, in contrast to the Lightning model's reduced latency. Additional features include lossless Personalized Spatial Audio and Spatial Audio content creation with head tracking, exclusive to the USB-C version. The Lightning version remains available from third-party retailers at often lower prices, offering a similar core experience for basic users. The USB-C model is the superior choice for audiophiles and content creators, due to the advanced audio capabilities. The USB-C version also offers a newer design and a different color selection. Both models share the same excellent build quality, ANC, and Spatial Audio features. When buying, consider discounts available on both models from third-party retailers.
