Android developer verification: Rolling out to all developers on Play Console and Android Developer Console
Android is introducing a new developer verification system to enhance app safety. This measure aims to combat malware found in sideloaded apps, which is significantly more prevalent than on Google Play. The verification process allows developers to register their apps, improving security without drastically altering the user experience. While the verification tools are rolling out now, user-facing changes will begin later this year, starting in select regions. Most app downloads will remain unchanged for the majority of users. Power users will still have the flexibility to install unregistered apps through advanced flows or ADB. The verification process has been refined based on developer feedback to integrate seamlessly with existing workflows. Students and hobbyists will have access to a free, limited distribution account option. The system service Android Developer Verifier will begin appearing in device settings in April 2026. App registration will become mandatory for installation and updates in specific countries by September 30, 2026, with a global rollout planned for 2027.
