Android Studio supports Gemma 4: our most capable local model for agentic coding
Google has introduced Gemma 4, a new AI model for coding assistance within Android Studio. This model operates locally, offering developers privacy, cost-efficiency, and offline functionality. Gemma 4's key benefits include enhanced privacy by keeping code on your machine and reduced costs by avoiding API key usage. It provides state-of-the-art reasoning for complex coding tasks in Agent Mode. Developers can use Agent Mode to design new features, refactor code, and fix bugs. Recommended hardware requirements vary based on the chosen Gemma 4 model size, with higher RAM needs for larger models. To utilize Gemma 4, developers need to install an LLM provider like LM Studio or Ollama and download the model. After configuration, Gemma 4 can be selected as the active model in Agent Mode. Google encourages user feedback to improve the AI experience in Android Studio. Users are encouraged to report bugs and engage with the Android developer community.
