Android XR Updates for Unity, Unreal, and Godot
Android XR now officially supports Unreal Engine and Godot, alongside Unity, for XR development. The Android XR Engine Hub, currently for Windows, streams device data directly to game engines for faster iteration in "Play Mode". The Hub supports hand tracking, eye gaze, and other extensions for efficient testing without full builds. Unreal Engine support, in developer preview, uses an Android XR plugin for platform-specific features like hand tracking. Godot support, in partnership with W4 Games, is available for Godot 4.6.2 and higher, with a plugin to access vendor extensions. Unity has updated Android XR packages, including Spatial API support and Direct Preview within the editor. The Android XR Interaction Framework (AXRIF) for Unity is in developer preview and offers a toolkit for consistent Android XR interactions. AXRIF handles multimodal input transitions, gaze-assisted gesture interaction, and physics-based 2D UI interaction. Developers can now utilize the platform's native interaction model, ensuring a consistent user experience.
