Announcing Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers

Google announced the Chromium project in 2008, which has since been used by hundreds of projects globally, including big browsers like Chrome and custom applications. In 2024, Google made over 100,000 commits to Chromium, accounting for 94% of contributions. Despite this investment, Google welcomes others to contribute more to the project. Google also invests heavily in the shared infrastructure of the Open Source project, including maintaining thousands of servers and responding to hundreds of incoming bugs daily. This work represents hundreds of millions of dollars in annual investment just for maintenance costs. Sustainable funding of critical open source infrastructure is a hot industry-wide topic of discussion. Google has partnered with The Linux Foundation to launch the Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers, an initiative to foster a sustainable environment of open-source contributions to the Chromium ecosystem. The fund will be managed by the Linux Foundation, prioritizing transparency, inclusivity, and community-driven development. Initial members include Meta, Microsoft, and Opera, and Google welcomes additional investment into Chromium's commons. Google remains committed to being the responsible steward of the Chromium project and to the massive investment necessary to keep Chromium working well for the entire web industry.
