Apple has unveiled the M5 Ultra, its most powerful chip to date. This new chip utilizes Apple's UltraFusion technology to connect two dual-die M5 Max chips, creating a quad-die architecture. UltraFusion significantly boosts inter-die bandwidth and connection density, enabling the four dies to operate as a single processor. The M5 Ultra features a CPU with up to 36 cores, offering substantial performance improvements over the M3 Ultra. Its GPU can scale to 80 cores, incorporating a Neural Accelerator in each for enhanced AI capabilities. This results in a dramatic increase in peak AI compute performance and faster graphics rendering. The chip also boasts a 32-core Neural Engine and an improved Media Engine with doubled video encode and decode capabilities. With support for up to 512GB of unified memory and increased memory bandwidth, the M5 Ultra facilitates handling massive datasets and on-device large language models. The M5 Ultra will be exclusively available in the new Mac Studio, which is now available for pre-order.
