Apple Execs Explain iPhone Duo's Display Design, Secrecy, and Price
Apple's new CEO John Ternus and marketing chief Greg Joswiak discussed the company's first foldable device, the iPhone Duo. Ternus explained that Apple waited to release a foldable until it met their high standards for quality, durability, and design. They observed existing foldables and found them uninspiring, leading Apple to pursue a unique approach. Joswiak highlighted two key aspects of Apple's design philosophy for the Duo. First, they opted for a wider 1:1.4 aspect ratio to avoid the appearance of two phones awkwardly joined together. Second, Apple focused extensively on software to differentiate the Duo from other foldables. Ternus revealed that the inner screen uses a polymer top layer instead of glass, necessitating a new manufacturing process for their signature nano-texture finish. This finish aims to provide a superior touch experience and durability compared to the plastic surfaces of rival devices. Joswiak expressed pride in Apple's ability to keep the project secret by implementing enhanced security measures and using a misleading code name. Despite some leakers correctly identifying the aspect ratio, Apple managed to prevent broader leaks about the device itself. Ternus defended the $1,999 starting price, deeming it great value and emphasizing that the iPhone Duo functions as two products in one. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are scheduled to begin on October 16, with the official launch on October 23.
