Apple Explains Why It Removed ICE Tracking Apps Last Year
Apple stated in a July 2026 letter to Representative Jamie Raskin that its removal of the ICEBlock app from the App Store was due to agent safety concerns. These concerns were amplified by the Trump administration following two detainee deaths at a Dallas ICE office. The fatal shooting led to increased worries about the safety of immigration agents. Apple removed ICEBlock in October 2025, prompting Raskin to investigate the Justice Department's potential involvement. Apple's explanation to Raskin had not been previously disclosed. The company cited violation of Guideline 1.1.1 of its App Review Guidelines for the removal. This guideline prohibits apps that provide law enforcement location information usable for harm. Apple indicated that law enforcement provided information substantiating this violation. The app's purpose was deemed to facilitate harm to individual or groups of officers. Consequently, ICEBlock was removed and has not been reinstated on the App Store.
