Apple Intelligence Coming to China in December With iOS 27.3
Apple is preparing to launch a limited version of its Apple Intelligence features in China with the upcoming iOS 27.3 update. This comes after a two-year delay due to regulatory hurdles. The initial rollout will include basic AI capabilities for tasks such as photo editing. However, advanced features like the full Siri AI, Image Playground, Genmoji, and extensive text generation tools will not be available. Apple had to secure network access permits from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to enable the service. To comply with China's restrictions on foreign AI technology, Apple has partnered with local tech giants Alibaba and Baidu. These partnerships will integrate Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models into iPhones. Furthermore, Apple must seek approval from the Chinese government for all future updates to these AI models. This move aims to address the competitive disadvantage Apple faced against local smartphone makers who already offer AI features. The iOS 27.3 update is anticipated to be released in December.
