Apple Overhauls EU App Store Fees to Settle Digital Markets Act Dispute
Apple has updated its App Store policies in the European Union to comply with the Digital Markets Act. These changes aim to simplify fees and resolve disputes with the European Commission. The initial acquisition and store services fees are removed for apps distributed outside the App Store. A new 5% Core Technology Commission will apply to digital purchases, replacing the previous per-install fee. Commission rates for various distribution methods and payment options have changed. For apps using in-app purchase on the App Store, the fee is 26%, or 15% for some program participants and auto-renewing subscriptions after the first year. Apps using alternative payments within the App Store will incur a 20% fee, reduced to 10% for program members. Apps that link out for purchases will pay 15%, with a 10% rate for program participants. Apps distributed through alternative marketplaces or the web will face a 5% Core Technology Commission. Developers can now offer both in-app purchases and alternative payment options in the EU, with specific presentation requirements for user clarity. Apps for children will not include external transaction links, and parental gates are mandated for users under 18 using alternative payment methods or external links. Financial requirements for operating alternative app marketplaces have also been eased. These new terms are available for developers to sign now, with changes effective October 1.
