Apple Releases New AirPods Max Firmware With Lossless and Low-Latency Audio Support

Apple has released a new firmware update for the USB-C version of AirPods Max headphones, version 7E99, which brings lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio when paired with iOS 18.4. The update enables 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio, allowing listeners to experience music as intended by the artist. This feature, combined with Personalized Spatial Audio, provides a more immersive and accurate listening experience. Music creators can use the AirPods Max to create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking using a Mac with Logic Pro or other music creation software. The lossless audio and ultra-low latency features are exclusive to the USB-C AirPods Max and require the latest firmware and a device running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4. To install the firmware, simply put the AirPods Max in Bluetooth range of a connected device and plug them in to charge, which may take up to 30 minutes. Users can check their firmware version by going to Settings > Bluetooth and selecting the Info button next to the AirPods Max. The update is only available for the USB-C version of the headphones. The AirPods Max support a more sonically accurate and uncompressed listening experience with lossless audio and Personalized Spatial Audio. Overall, the update enhances the listening experience for users and provides new creative possibilities for music creators.
