Three customers are suing Apple, claiming they lost a total of $1.8 million due to a fake Bitcoin wallet app in the App Store. The lawsuit alleges Apple violated consumer protection laws by failing to properly vet apps despite marketing the App Store as safe and trustworthy. The fraudulent app, disguised as Sparrow Wallet, tricked users into believing it was legitimate. However, the real Sparrow Wallet is only available on desktop platforms and not on iOS. The fake app allowed scammers to drain users' cryptocurrency assets to their own wallets. Plaintiffs James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis, and Jalen Delgado collectively lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin. The lawsuit further claims Apple took minimal action even when victims reported the fraud. Sparrow Wallet's developer has publicly criticized Apple's slow response in removing fake versions of his app. He even had his developer account flagged for termination after attempting to warn users. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for their lost funds.
