Apple Suppliers Face Hurdles Cutting Circuit Board Emissions

Apple's goal to reduce supply chain emissions is significantly challenged by printed circuit board manufacturers' increasing energy consumption. This rise in energy demand stems from the need for more advanced components. Both Apple and Google are pushing their suppliers to publish sustainability reports and increase renewable electricity usage. These suppliers are also being urged to collaborate with their own upstream suppliers on emission reductions. However, the growing market for complex boards crucial for AI and high-performance computing escalates electricity and water needs in production. This directly complicates Apple's directive for direct manufacturing partners to use 100% renewable electricity for its production by 2030. In the PCB industry, purchased electricity represents a substantial portion, nearly 60%, of total emissions. Beyond energy, changing materials presents another hurdle for these manufacturers. Current lower-carbon material alternatives do not yet meet the performance standards for advanced boards. Furthermore, widespread adoption of these alternative materials requires extensive and time-consuming testing.
