Apple Vision Pro Was Almost Called 'Reality Pro'
The Vision Pro headset was internally known as "Reality Pro" during its development, a detail confirmed by prototype collector Kosutami who cited internal strings like "realityprorealityosdev." This internal naming aligns with earlier reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who had predicted the headset would launch as "Apple Reality Pro." Trademark filings for "Reality One," "Reality Pro," and "Reality Processor" appeared in 2022, alongside an earlier "realityOS" trademark in 2021, all filed through shell companies. However, Apple ultimately unveiled the device as "Vision Pro" at WWDC 2023, with its operating system named "visionOS," abandoning the "Reality" branding for the final product and OS. Traces of the old naming, like the string Kosutami found, remained in internal software builds due to this late-stage switch. Apple reportedly still holds trademark rights to "Reality Pro" and "Reality One," which could be important in markets like China where Huawei holds the "Vision Pro" trademark until 2031. Gurman suggested Apple might use "Reality Pro" branding in regions where "Vision Pro" is unavailable due to trademark conflicts. The Vision Pro launched in the U.S. in February 2024 at $3,499. Recently, Apple laid off about 100 members of its Vision Products Group and disbanded its Vision Pro gaming and immersive video teams, signaling a shift in product strategy. These cuts follow reports that Apple has shelved the Vision Pro 2 and a cheaper "Vision Air," instead focusing on smart glasses for the future.
