Apple's Latest App Store Changes Satisfy EU, No More Fines Coming

The European Union is poised to accept Apple's App Store updates made in June to comply with the Digital Markets Act, averting potential daily fines. Apple modified its App Store fees and removed anti-steering rules, allowing developers to direct users to external purchase options. Developers can now choose between two service tiers with varying fees and App Store feature access. The cheaper tier removes ratings, reviews, featuring, search suggestions, and automatic updates. Fees include a percentage of revenue, an initial acquisition fee, and a Core Technology Commission (CTC). By 2026, Apple will transition to a single business model with a maximum fee of 20% and no per-install billing. Choosing limited App Store functionality results in a lower maximum fee. Failure to comply could have resulted in daily fines of up to €50 million. The European Commission's acceptance of the updates is expected soon. Apple has appealed a previous €500 million fine and is protesting the anti-steering rules.
