Apple's Swift Coding Language Is Working On Android Support

Apple's Swift programming language is expanding its official support to Android through the creation of an "Android Working Group". This group aims to improve compatibility, integration, and tooling for Swift on Android. Currently, Android apps are primarily coded in Kotlin, but Apple wants to offer Swift as an alternative. Swift was initially launched in 2014 for Apple's own platforms, but it already supports Windows and Linux officially. The Working Group will focus on several key areas, including improving and maintaining Android support for Swift, enhancing core Swift packages, and defining platform support levels. The group will also determine the range of supported Android API levels and architectures, develop continuous integration for Android testing, and identify best practices for bridging between Swift and Android's Java SDK. Additionally, the group will work on developing support for debugging Swift applications on Android and assisting with adding Android support to community Swift packages. Overall, the goal is to provide official support for Swift on Android, making it a viable alternative to Kotlin. By doing so, Apple hopes to expand the reach of its programming language beyond its own ecosystem.
