Extreme photoreduction is often limited by uncontrolled, diffusion-driven reactivity of highly energetic intermediates. Here, the authors report an association-gated photocatalytic strategy that assembles sequential donor–acceptor complexes to create confined reaction pockets, enabling selective activation of strong carbon–halogen bonds.
