Australia politics live: independent Sophie Scamps delivers scathing criticism of ‘weak, piecemeal, pathetic’ gambling reforms as deal looms
A deal on a gambling bill between Labor and the Coalition is anticipated after today's party room meetings. Treasurer Jim Chalmers described proposed amendments to gambling regulations as "very substantial changes." These changes aim to simplify the process for individuals to opt out of gambling advertising. The opt-out register is designed to be revenue-neutral, with the gambling industry covering the costs. Chalmers also emphasized the regulator's crucial role in enforcing rules against inducements offered by gambling companies. Concerns were raised about the flawed implementation of aged care reforms, particularly their negative impact on older Australians. There are worries that similar problematic automation could be applied to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). If an algorithm as flawed as the one in aged care is used for NDIS assessments, it could impact over 750,000 Australians with disabilities. Such a scenario would lead to serious concerns and prompt further discussion.
