AWS Lambda announces Lambda Web Functions
AWS Lambda has introduced Lambda Web Functions, a new serverless compute service designed for direct handling of HTTP requests. This allows developers to use familiar web frameworks like Express or Hono without needing adapters. Lambda Web Functions are suitable for workloads such as AI inference, server-side rendered applications, streaming APIs, and microservices. Billing is based on active CPU time and memory usage, eliminating charges for idle periods. Existing Lambda functions are now renamed Lambda Event Functions, requiring no changes for users. This feature aims to accelerate AI-driven development by enabling local development with familiar programming models and low-latency, active-usage-based payment. Currently, Lambda Web Functions supports the Node.js runtime and offers significantly reduced cold starts due to warm execution environments handling multiple requests. Native HTTP streaming allows for incremental result delivery to clients. Configuration can be done through various AWS tools and SDKs. Multi-Region routing and VPC connectivity are also supported. Lambda Web Functions are available in select AWS Regions, with more information provided in the developer guide and pricing pages.
