Bacterial ribonucleoprotein bodies maintain an acidic pH environment as a mechanism of enzyme regulation
Ratiometric pH sensors show that phase-separated BR-bodies in Caulobacter crescentus form acidic interiors, tuned by scaffold protein charge, to regulate enzymatic activity. Disrupting this pH control impairs stationary phase recovery and causes stress-induced morphological defects.
