The word of the day, bellwether, signifies something that indicates future trends. It can also describe a leader that others follow. Organizers view a concert series as a bellwether, proving popular events attract visitors. Disney's influence makes it a bellwether for the entertainment industry. The term's origin is not related to meteorology, despite the "wether" in its name. Instead, it derives from sheep farming practices. Historically, a bell was placed on a lead sheep in a flock. This designated sheep was known as the bellwether. The word combines "belle" (bell) and "wether" (a male sheep). This evolved to mean someone who initiates trends adopted by others.
