The website "This Person Does Not Exist" uses AI to create realistic but fake faces, highlighting a flaw in the common design practice of using personas. While personas aim to represent user types through fictional characters with detailed profiles, they fall short of reflecting real users. This is because personas are decontextualized representations that present individuals as static, ignoring the influence of environment and situational factors on behavior. Personas often become meaningless averages that combine isolated findings from different individuals, resulting in a lack of depth and true relatability. While designers try to compensate for this by adding fictional details, this further detaches the persona from reality and reinforces stereotypes. Instead of relying on personas, designers should focus on understanding real individuals within their dynamic contexts, an approach referred to as "Dynamic Selves". This involves studying a well-chosen sample of individuals in depth, rather than superficially gathering data from a large group. By focusing on real-life experiences and motivations, designers gain more accurate and insightful information to inform their design process. This approach acknowledges the fluidity of human behavior and the significant role of context in shaping actions and decisions. By shifting the focus from artificial representations to real-world understanding, designers can create more meaningful and effective design solutions.
