Blender is developing a native iPad version of its 3D creation suite, designed specifically for artists who use tablets. The goal is to bring the full power of Blender to the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil Pro without compromises. The team is adapting the interface to platform-specific paradigms and task-oriented user interfaces with reduced information density. The first version will focus on sculpting and basic object manipulation, with plans to add tools like the Grease Pencil and storyboarding later. The interface will feature a single-window workflow, floating UI elements, and contextual overlays to prioritize screen real estate and quick access to tools. This is not a simplified mobile version of the app, but rather a custom application template designed for devices like the iPad. The target audience is existing Blender users, with no distinction between desktop or tablet users. A live tech demo will be shown at SIGGRAPH 2025, with follow-up discussions and design workshops planned for later in the year. After the iPad Pro version is released, Blender will be developed for other touch-based input devices, including the Microsoft Surface and Wacom MovinkPad. Some of the work being done for tablets will also benefit the desktop version, such as a Quick Favorites editor and a Helper overlay with curated shortcuts.
