Bliki: Expansion Joints Note

Bliki: Expansion Joints

The author developed a technique called Expansion Joints to manage talk timing effectively. These are pre-planned optional topics that can be covered briefly or at length. This allows speakers to adjust their presentation duration without seeming rushed or unprepared. Each Expansion Joint typically consists of a single slide with key phrases, serving as prompts for discussion. If time is short, the topic is summarized quickly, often stating it's out of scope. Conversely, if ample time is available, the speaker can elaborate on the optional material. The author also mastered the art of skipping slides invisibly to the audience, a skill requiring laptop control. This technique provided confidence, especially since the author did not rehearse talks extensively. Expansion Joints proved invaluable for adapting talks to varying time slots and managing audience interaction. These flexible segments are most useful towards the end of a presentation when remaining time is clearest.
