Bluesky, a decentralized social network, initially benefited from users leaving Elon Musk's X after the 2024 U.S. elections. However, nearly two years later, the platform is experiencing a decline in user engagement. Data from Similarweb indicates a significant year-over-year drop in both monthly and daily active users for Bluesky's mobile app. While third-party analytics should be viewed with caution, the trend suggests Bluesky's user base is considerably smaller than competitors like Threads and X. Even accounting for potential inaccuracies in the data, Bluesky's user numbers are estimated to be an order of magnitude less than these larger platforms. In contrast, Mastodon, another decentralized network, is now rarely mentioned in comparisons due to its even smaller user base. The author personally favors Mastodon for its smaller, less dramatic community. Nevertheless, a small user base inherently limits a platform's mainstream cultural relevance. Therefore, despite its initial surge, Bluesky is struggling to maintain its momentum and achieve widespread cultural impact.
