A German startup, Rheinmetall, has designed a new type of EV charger that fits seamlessly inside a curb at the edge of a street, called the Curb Charger, upgrades existing urban infrastructure without adding extra street furniture. This charger is ideal for apartment dwellers who park their cars on the street, making it easier to own an EV as they can plug in or when the car is parked for hours. The Curb Charger is nearly invisible, which can be a challenge, but an app can direct drivers to the nearest charging point. The charger is strong enough to withstand a heavy truck driving over it and is waterproof, and drivers can activate it through an app or by scanning a QR code. The equipment doesn't cost more than a conventional charging station, and the small size means installation can be simpler and cost less. If a charger needs repair, the charging module can be swapped out, making maintenance less expensive as well. In a yearlong pilot in Cologne, the chargers were used nearly 3,000 times through all weather conditions, staying online 99% of the time, and users gave them high ratings. Rheinmetall is now scaling up production and beginning new installations in other cities. The Curb Charger makes slow charging feasible, which helps EV batteries last longer and is less of a strain on the grid.
