Changes to iOS in Brazil
Apple has reached an agreement with Brazil's competition regulator CADE to introduce changes to iOS that provide new options for developers in Brazil. The changes will be implemented starting with iOS 26.5 and will allow developers to distribute apps on alternative app marketplaces. Developers will also be able to operate alternative app marketplaces and process app payments for digital goods and services outside of Apple In-App Purchase. However, these new options also pose risks such as malware, fraud, scams, and privacy and security risks. To mitigate these risks, Apple has worked with CADE to introduce new protections, including Notarization for iOS apps and an authorization process for app marketplaces. The protections also include requirements to help protect children from inappropriate content and scams, with a special emphasis on child safety. By July 6, 2026, all current members of the Apple Developer Program will need to agree to the latest update to the Apple Developer Program License Agreement. The updated agreement includes new terms that allow for these options in Brazil, and developers can learn more about the updates through various resources. Developers can also request a 30-minute online appointment to ask questions about the changes and how they will be implemented. The introduction of these changes aims to provide more flexibility for developers in Brazil while also ensuring the safety and security of users.
