Channel synapse mediates neurotransmission of airway protective chemoreflexes

Soma et al. identify pathways for airway protective reflexes of swallowing and respiratory expulsion in mice, driven by rare subsets of chemosensory epithelial cells in the hypopharynx and larynx, with channel synapses for neurotransmission to vagal nerves, which contribute to allergic hyperresponsivity.
