Former Chicago police officer Jeffrey Kriv pleaded guilty to felony theft after repeatedly lying under oath about his car being stolen to avoid traffic tickets. He admitted to blaming an ex-girlfriend for stealing his BMW to get dozens of tickets dismissed. Kriv, a prolific drunk-driving enforcer, was sentenced to 18 months probation and ordered to pay restitution. His perjury and forgery charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement. ProPublica's analysis reveals that at least 92 cases based on Kriv's arrests and tickets have been dismissed due to his credibility issues. Many of these dismissed cases involved drunk and dangerous driving. Kriv had a history of alleged misconduct, including over 26 dishonesty investigations, and nearly 100 citizen and officer complaints. He retired just before facing charges. Prosecutors dropped pending cases involving Kriv because they could not rely on his testimony. The state's attorney's office will review convictions from Kriv-involved cases. Kriv's pension benefits are now under review due to his felony conviction. He had previously maintained his innocence and criticized the dismissal of other cases.
