Civilization developer Firaxis is laying off staff

Firaxis, the developer behind the Civilization series, is experiencing layoffs. Their publisher, 2K, confirmed the staff reductions are part of a restructuring and optimization effort. The exact number of employees affected is undisclosed, but reports suggest dozens of workers were impacted. Some former employees who worked on Civilization VII and Marvel's Midnight Suns have publicly stated they were laid off. These layoffs are occurring despite Take-Two Interactive, Firaxis' parent company, projecting financial growth for the latter half of 2025. The game industry has seen a trend of layoffs regardless of a game's success or failure. Firaxis' most recent release, Civilization VII, launched in February 2025 with a new approach to gameplay. The studio has continued to provide updates and fixes for the game since its release. The circumstances surrounding the layoffs, especially given the company's financial outlook, are notable.
