Couple from Netflix's Skywalkers get engaged, then arrested after climbing Empire State Building
Russian daredevils Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus got engaged at the highest point of the Empire State Building, an act that is not allowed, and were promptly arrested by the NYPD. The couple, who were featured in the Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, flew an anti-war banner from the top of the building's antenna and exchanged kisses before proposing. Netflix capitalized on the stunt by sharing pictures of the couple from the documentary on its social media. The documentary, directed by Jeff Zimbalist, was released in 2024 and follows the pair, who are prolific influencers in the rooftopping subculture. Nikolau and Beerkus began a relationship after Beerkus decided his videos would do better with a female partner. The pair were met by the NYPD on their way back down the spire and were arrested, with bodycam footage of the arrest serving as a counterpart to the photos and videos they posted of their stunt. The Empire State Building's PR department responded to the stunt by emphasizing that the building's observation deck offers a practical way for memorable marriage proposals. The couple's actions were seen as a romantic gesture, but also as a reckless stunt that put themselves and others at risk. The incident highlights the risks and consequences of rooftopping and the importance of safety and security measures. The Empire State Building's response to the stunt was seen as a way to promote the building's observation deck as a safer and more practical alternative for romantic gestures.
