Current Topics in Obesity

Worldwide, obesity affects approximately 19% of women and 14% of men. In the US, obesity affects approximately 42% of adults and has been projected to affect 1 in 2 adults by the year 2030. New medications with incretin-based effects, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, can help individuals achieve weight loss of 15% and 21%, respectively, providing new and highly effective therapeutic options for obesity. These incretin-based therapies also have cardiometabolic effects that can improve human health. For example, semaglutide prevented new cardiovascular events in patients with established cardiovascular disease and slowed progression of chronic kidney disease. Tirzepatide was effective for treating patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. New and even more potent medications for obesity treatment are undergoing testing in randomized clinical trials and are likely to be available to clinicians in the relatively near future.
