Dataflows: Thank you for eight years of Gen1—and why Gen2 is the future
Dataflows Gen1 will remain functional but is in legacy state and won't receive new features. Dataflows Gen2 is the future, offering improved performance, flexibility, and cost efficiency over Gen1. Premium customers should prioritize Gen2 adoption, especially for new and evolving workloads, while Pro and PPU users can continue using Gen1 for now. GCC support for Gen2 will precede Gen1 retirement milestones for Premium users. New administrative controls are being developed to enable granular Fabric features, including selective Gen2 activation. Gen2 builds upon the same Power Query experience as Gen1, offering broader destination support including Fabric Lakehouse and Snowflake. It provides AI-powered features like Copilot, and richer diagnostics for improved troubleshooting. Gen2's tiered pricing model aims to optimize compute costs for users. The recommendation is to begin planning Gen1 to Gen2 upgrades using methods like "Save as Dataflow Gen2".
