Deprecation of old Excel and CSV import experience in Power BI Service

Power BI is updating how it handles Excel and CSV file imports, impacting a specific older method. This update affects users who previously imported Excel/CSV files through the "Create" page. The old import method will be completely deprecated, starting with disabling new model creation by May 31, 2026. Reports created using this legacy method will stop refreshing data from the source file by July 31, 2026. These reports can still be viewed, but the data will become outdated if not updated. By August 31, 2026, existing semantic models using the old method will become unavailable, causing reports to fail. Users can identify affected semantic models if they cannot be edited in the browser or lack a refresh schedule. To maintain data freshness, recreate reports using the current Excel and CSV connectors. Microsoft provides guidance on how to create reports with other options. The removal of the legacy import method streamlines the platform and encourages the use of modern connectors. Users are encouraged to learn about the new methods and provide feedback.
