Eclipsa Video: HDR That Looks Right on Every Screen
Android's Product Managers introduced Eclipsa Video to address inconsistencies in HDR video playback across different screens. Currently, the same HDR video can appear jarringly bright or dull depending on the display. Eclipsa Video is a new standard, building on SMPTE ST 2094-50, designed for consistent and comfortable video rendering. It eliminates guesswork by providing precise guidelines for displays on how to render image brightness. Eclipsa Video offers a consistent baseline brightness for readability and avoids uncomfortable glare. It also provides adaptive headroom, intelligently scaling highlights on mobile screens to prevent blinding transitions. The format preserves creative intent by carrying frame-by-frame instructions for color, contrast, and mood. Starting with Android 17, Eclipsa Video support is integrated directly into the platform for phones, tablets, and TVs. Developers and creators are invited to implement Eclipsa Video playback and capture using provided guides and open-source tools. As an open standard, Eclipsa Video is expected to gain wider adoption by app developers and hardware manufacturers over time.
