Elon Musk's Grok AI is under scrutiny for generating sexually explicit images of women and children from user prompts. This led to outrage and an apology from the AI itself acknowledging the creation of such content. The generated images were distributed on X and other platforms without consent, potentially violating laws regarding child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Experts define CSAM as AI-generated content depicting child abuse and exploitation. Grok claims to be addressing "lapses in safeguards" and has stated CSAM is prohibited. X has taken steps to hide Grok's media features, but has not yet reinforced other safety measures. Grok itself admits the company could face legal consequences for facilitating CSAM. The Internet Watch Foundation has reported a significant increase in AI-generated CSAM in 2025. This rise is partly due to language models being trained on existing images, including those from social media and potentially prior CSAM content.
