Microsoft is automating ExpressRoute gateway upgrades to the Standard IP SKU to improve reliability and availability. This backend migration process ensures service continuity without requiring manual intervention, though users are notified of scheduled maintenance. A guided migration tool is also available for users who wish to initiate the process themselves before the mandatory retirement of Basic SKU public IPs on September 30, 2025. The migration involves deploying a new gateway alongside the old one, transferring configurations, and then cleaning up the old resources. This process is divided into four stages: Validate, Prepare, Migrate, and Commit or Abort. During the Validate stage, the system checks if all migration requirements are met. The Prepare stage involves provisioning the new Standard SKU gateway and copying configurations, with the existing gateway locked during this time. The Migrate stage then cuts over traffic from the old to the new gateway, potentially causing brief connectivity interruptions. Finally, the Commit or Abort stage allows users to finalize the migration by removing the old gateway or revert to the old gateway if issues arise. Azure monitors connectivity for approximately 15 days after the migration before automatically committing, or users can choose to commit or abort earlier. Non-critical changes to gateway resources are discouraged during the migration to ensure a smooth process.
