Roche announced FDA approval of Susvimo (ranibizumab injection) for diabetic retinopathy (DR). This innovative treatment offers a continuous delivery system, potentially reducing the frequency of eye injections. Susvimo is the first and only FDA-approved continuous delivery treatment for DR to maintain vision. The approval is based on positive results from the phase III Pavilion study. In the study, patients receiving Susvimo every nine months showed superior improvements on the DRSS. Susvimo achieved this compared to those receiving standard anti-VEGF injections. The implantable device is surgically inserted and refilled every nine months. This offers a potential alternative to frequent injections for patients with DR. DR is a potentially blinding condition affecting nearly 10 million Americans. Susvimo is also approved for treating other eye conditions like neovascular AMD. Roche aims to expand treatment options and preserve vision in patients with retinal conditions.
